Statement of Significance

The railway precinct represents the genesis of the town of Kulin.

History

The railway line from Narrogin
to Wickepin via Yilliminning was opened in 1909, and the line through from Yilliminning to Kondinin
via Kulin was proposed. In April 1912, a meeting of settlers took place in Wogolin. It was decided to
send a delegation to the Premier to lobby for a preferred route for the Railway line which was being
surveyed. In December 1914, a picnic was planned in Wogolin to celebrate the line opening though
Dudinin and Jitarning, but World War One intervened. On 15 March 1915 the railway line through to
Kulin was taken over by the Government and on 16 March it was officially opened and the first train
rolled into Kulin. The goods office was the first permanent construction in Kulin and later the goods
shed was constructed. The sheep sales yards had a small corrugated iron shed in the centre with a
rainwater tank and a copper where the CWA ladies catered the afternoon teas at the sales.
