Statement of Significance

House, 41 Marmion Street, is a single storey brick and iron house dating from c1910. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 41 Marmion Street is a single storey brick and zincalume house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are rendered and face brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with zincalume, and has exposed rafters. There are two red face brick corbelled chimneys evident. The small gable has a timber roof vent. The verandah is under the main zincalume roof supported by timber posts with wide roof supports, and returns down the side of the house. The asymmetrical front façade has a protruding front room under the large gable roof with a timber framed sash window under a zincalume awning supported by timber brackets. The facade under the verandah roof is difficult to describe due to large vegetation in the front yard. The house is situated at street level. There is a medium height red face brick fence to the front boundary line.

History

The Metropolitan Sewerage map sheet 2068 dated October 1915 shows a brick house with a protruding room on the right hand side of the front and a verandah on the left hand side. The front room of the house and the front of the verandah are level. There is a verandah on the right rear corner, a rectangle with the long side facing the side of the house rather than the rear. At the rear of the house is a timber wash house outbuilding and a brick closet (toilet).
