Statement of Significance

The Coorow Hotel has high streetscape value given its large scale, prominent location and decorative treatments. Further the place has considerable historic significance and has served the community for over 67 years.

Physical Description

A large two storey 'L-shaped' building with verandahs to ground and upper storey, the latter having asbestos infill. A gable roof enhances the main entrance and features English style timber bargeboards and fínial. The main entrance also features lead light windows to double entry doors and surrounds. Other windows feature decorative render and paintwork. A single storey concrete block and tile roof extension to the rear forms the 'L-shape' of the building. Situated to the rear of the hotel there is a large concrete block garage with a corrugated iron skillion roof. Paint treatment to the main building, is grey verandah posts, dark red to other joinery, and white walls.

History

Built 1930 for Patrick Conolly and Alec Gloucester at a cost of £12,879, it had it's own electric power plant and hot and cold water to each guestroom. Alec Gloucester was the first licensee. The hotel was also referred to as the 'Halfway House' being halfway between Perth and Geraldton. (Source: Harry Kau).
