Statement of Significance

The site is significant in its association with Leslie Stacey,
Sunnyvale, and the fat lamb industry. The siding is representative of the railway network, success.

History

Leslie Stacey took over the Sunnyvale property after his father's death in 1932. He became a successful breeder of fat lambs, in 1942, a special train was commissioned to Badjalling Siding to transport over 3000 lambs direct to Robbs Jetty Abattoir. The train became an annual event with over 10000 lambs being transported in 1971, by two diesels and 88 sheep wagons, breaking the record for the longest stock train in the state. The consignment was also recognised as the largest from one grower in the world at the time. Leslie Stacey received an M.B.E. in 1963 for his services to the Fat lamb Industry, and when he died in 1972, his son Bryant carried on the tradition.
