Statement of Significance

The place represents a way of life associated with banking, adaption to change, community use and associations with Bruce Rock identities. It is a fine architectural example of the period and makes a significant contribution to the streetscape and townscape charcter of Bruce Rock.

Physical Description

Brick construction with a hipped clay tile roof. The symmetrical frontage is offset by a gable feature over the northern-most of the two entries. A string course of render at door height continues around the arched windows. The brickwork below floor level is rendered. The original building was the northern most section of the building, formerly symmetrical with the entry and pediment flanked by an arched window either side. The assymmetrical addition was the same construction and details.

History

The Western Australian Bank was operating in Bruce Rock as early as 1914, in a temporary site where the Church of Christ is now located. After the bank purchased this land, it opened by 23rd May 1921. In 1927, the Western Australian Bank merged with the Bank of New South Wales and operated as the Bank of NSW. When the bank constructed new premises in Bath Street in c1960, it offered this building to the Shire. During the 1960's the dentist was situated in the offices on the south, which was later the Opportunity Shop until 1990. In 1966, the Shire bought the place and Mrs Butler established a museum. After Mrs Butler died in 1970, the museum moved to the front room of the Shire Offices until 1985. At that time a Government employment scheme facilitated an upgrade of the former Bank of NSW building and converted the main hall into a museum.
