History

Warders’ Cottages, 31-41 Henderson Street was the second row of warders quarters built in Henderson Street, designed by Capt Henderson and constructed with convict labour for the warders and their families. It was completed in 1853 and was meant to accommodate 12 warders, with two rooms for each man and family. By the end of the 19th century each family had four rooms and these houses were combined so that instead of six single homes there were now three. This is still the case although the separate front doorways which still remain could mislead the passer-by. They were repaired while under prison control and were acquired by Homeswest in 1991.
