The site represents associations with post World War Two settlers, and a way of life no longer practised.
The first attempts to obtain a school in Burakin was in 1935, but it wasn't until another attempt on 18 May 1940, that the result was approval for an assisted school. Durack's old store was the venue when the school opened on 1 July 1941. It closed by the end of the school year in 1941.
On 10 May 1942 the Burakin School opened in a mud brick building that the parents had built. The building cost £92 and the funds were donated from the defunct branch of the Wheatgrowers' Union. The school closed on 18 July 1947 due to the lack of students, with the introduction of a school bus taking the students to the Ballidu School. After the school closed, the building was used as the church until it was demolished due to its unsafe condition.
