Inclusion in the Shire's Town Planning Scheme No. 4 means a local recognition and measure of protection of the heritage value of a place. Full implications of inclusion into the Town Planning Scheme No. 4 are outlined in appendix 1. Should a development application be received for a place, an assessment of the appropriateness of development would be made. Professional advice and consultation would be available, from the Heritage Council of WA, through the Wheatbelt Heritage Adviser, the Shire or specialised consultants, to inform property owners of development options should it be appropriate.

Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates a way of life associated with communication and postal facilities and a central place in the community. It is integral within the townscape and main street of Bindi Bindi.

Physical Description

The shop is basically a timber framed skillion shed clad with horizontal sheets of corrugated iron on all sides except the front facade. The front facade is clad with flat sheets of fibro cement with battens over the joins. The south side of the front has a fascia and cantilivered canopy over the return verandah. The adjoining residence on the south side is set back from the shop front (boundary). It is timebr framed with a corrugated iron roof and the front verandah fully enclosed with louvres and flat sheets of fibro cement, with a central door.

History

The Bindi Bindi telephone exchange was operated by Kathleen & Doreen Brian during the 1920's, from a tin shed "store" at the rear of their house at lot 3. Alf Borham owned the exchange building which also operated as a Wesfarmers Co-op Store and the Post Office. In the 1950's (1930's), the shop was built for Mr & Mrs Salmon and the Post Office and Phone Exchange relocated to the shop building.

Constructed in 1950's (1930's).
