Statement of Significance

The site is important for its association with the development of recreational activities in
the district.

Physical Description

A large building situated on the north east corner of the recreation ground. It has a high
roofline.

History

The construction of the Recreation Centre meant a wider range of sporting activities
could be undertaken and not be restricted by daylight hours or weather. Basketball,
badminton, indoor cricket are some of the sporting activities.

Badminton was a sport popular after the second war. It was first played in the
Woodanilling Hall in 1947. The organiser was Horrie Ahearn, the Co-op Manager, who
had played during war service. M Crossley was also prominent in the formation. When
the Katanning Badminton Association was formed in July 1950, the Woodanilling club
was one of eight clubs participating. The Woodanilling Club has always been an active
club, participating in social and pennant matches over the years. A high standard of
competition has been maintained with the players winning many events in the Central
Great Southern tournaments. When the club held its 21st birthday in 1968 all previous
members were invited to a social evening. During the night, a foundation member Ray
Garstone was awarded life membership. Other life members of the club are Des Shackley
and Joan Garstone who were honoured in 1980.
