Statement of Significance

The place has historic value for its associations with the Toodyay Gentleman's Club who had the place purpose built as their clubrooms. The club was associated with identities such as Lord Forrest and local identities; Vernon Hamersley, Bernard Connor, Charles Lukin and Dr Crawford. The place has social value as an illustration of the former practice of gentleman's clubs. The place has aesthetic value as it contributes to the streetscape of Stirling Terrace

Physical Description

A much altered single storey structure with substantial additions to the sire and rear elevations. The shop adjoining the restaurant was constructed c.2000. Although parts of the original form of the building can still be seen, the alterations have resulted in substantial loss of original character. Red brick construction with timbered gables, open verandah extending across the outside seating area. Sash windows, some of which have been replaced with shop windows and door openings.

History

In 1905Bernard Maurice Connor, Dr. Crawford and Charles Maxwell Lukin were instrumental in establishing the Toodyay gentleman's Club. Vernon Hamersley was the President in 1906. After initially meeting in a disused store, by the end of 1908, they opened new premises where members could meet. The opening ceremony was conducted by Admiral Sir G. Bedford. The building was constructed by local builder Henry Davey (1853-1910) who was also the hotel-keeper of the Freemasons and member of the Toodyay Municipal Council.
