Statement of Significance

The place at 135 Albany Hwy has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
It is significant individually and as one of a group of historic houses on the western side of Albany Highway, originally named Perth Road and historically being an important main road linking Albany to Perth and the entry to the townsite.
Together with 51, 55, 75, 77, 81, 85, 137 and 139, the group forms an important and eclectic streetscape representing different periods of development from the 1880s, various architectural styles and uses of fabric but which illustrates the residential development. The streetscape is also heightened by the presence of the old Albany Primary School on the eastern side of the Highway.
The place is associated with Mr T M Palmer who was the long serving schoolmaster at Albany Government School from 1857-1890.

Physical Description

Some of the notable features of this place include:
• Symmetrical facade
• Double-hipped corrugated iron roof
• Verandah under separate roof
• Large chimneys

Some obvious modifications include:
• Perimeter masonry wall detracts from streetscape value
• Addition to the rear with hipped roof and visually separated to original house with flat roof link building.
• Front verandah added, replacing former cantilevered awning over front door

History

The house at 135 Albany Highway was located originally on Lot 47 which was subdivided into a number of Lots c1890. The Rate Book entry for 1890 shows the owner and tenant as Mr T M Palmer, schoolmaster. The 1894 Rate Book shows Mrs Palmer as the owner of the house next door (137 Albany Highway).
Palmer was the schoolmaster of the Government School in Albany (originally located on the west side of Stirling Terrace). Having taken up the position in c1857, after 33 years as schoolmaster he retired at the end of the school year in 1890.
