The site was critical to the location of the siding and subsequent
town of Dudinin. It represents the ongoing sustainability of settlement.
Dudinin is located in a valley and was considered a good site for a
dam to provide for the steam trains which were to run on the proposed railway line south east from
Narrogin through Yilliminning. The railway subsequently passed through Dudinin in preference to
Wogolin, only 6 miles north along the Rabbit proof fence. The dam was built in 1912 to provide for
the forthcoming railway line and running of the steam trains. The dam provided a reliable supply of
water for the railway workers whose campsite was located close by. Steam driven pumps were
installed to pump the water for the locomotives. The water was pumped into elevated tanks, and
provided water to the town of Dudinin. Even after Scheme water was connected in 1971, the dam
supplemented those supplies.
