Statement of Significance

Historic - one of the first substantial buildings built in the Gnowangerup townsite,
prior to this most were made of galvanised iron.
Social - meeting place for the community, visitors from out of town etc. The
railway line ran behind the hotel and would drop travellers off at the hotel.

Physical Description

The Gnowangerup Hotel is situated in Allardyce Street, Gnowangerup. Previous
to the building of the railway line, Gnowangerup was known as the 'dry place' with
no accommodation or facilities for refreshment. The influx of railway workers
resulted in the building of the Gnowangerup Hotel. The bricks for the hotel were
made locally by W Parker. Wood and iron were brought from Broomehill by
wagons and horses. The first proprietor was Mr Bobby Norris. It is said that on
the opening night 500 sovereigns were taken.
