The place at 5 Mill Street has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
Originally built as staff housing, the place is associated with the adjacent Worsted and Woollen Mills which was the first to be built in Western Australia and became one of the most important secondary industries in Albany providing a major source of employment for men and women.
The place is a rare example of staff housing for a major secondary industry development in Albany.
Some of the notable features of this place include:
• High streetscape value
• Corner setting
• Tall chimney with moulded capping
• Projecting gable wing with timber infill and finial
• Corrugated iron roof with verandah under separate roof
• Double hung sash windows
• Painted window and door surrounds
• Simple landscaping behind low picket fence
Both the houses at 5 and 9 Mill St were used for accommodation for management staff who worked at Albany Woollen Mills that is located in the same street. The street was once called Gairdner St but was renamed Mill Street after the Woollen Mills. Sometimes people mistake 5 Mill St for 16-18 Festing St as it is a corner block.
