House, 79 Swanbourne Street, is a single storey brick and iron house dating from c1908. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.
79 Swanbourne Street is a single storey masonry and corrugated iron house constructed in the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are red face brick. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah is under a continuous corrugated iron roof supported by timber posts and timber balustrading. The asymmetrical front façade has two timber framed double hung sash windows. There is a limestone wall to the front boundary line.
The Sewerage Plan of June 1908 shows a house at the very front of a long block, with a verandah wrapped around the front room and 2 water tanks by the back door. It also shows a verandah on the left half of the back of the house with a W.C. on the verandah.
A black and white photo taken 1978 shows a dwelling of painted brick construction with an iron roof and a brick chimney. There is a verandah under the main roof with a change of angle. The front wall shows 2 sash windows close together then the front door also facing the front but set back. The verandah has wooden posts with simple decorated supports at the top. The end gable wall to the left of the front door is fibro. The verandah on the side leading to the front door has a low wall, possibly tin, with a diagonal line pattern on square panels. The electricity meter in on the right hand side of the front door.
This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle")
