House, 18 Martha Street, is a single storey brick and iron house dating from c1910. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.
House, 18 Martha Street is a single storey brick and zincalume house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are rendered brick. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with zincalume. There is a chimney evident. The verandah is under a separate dropped skillion roof supported by steel poles and partly enclosed with a lattice frieze. The asymmetrical front façade has a protruding front room under the gable roof with non-original windows and no awning. The facade under the verandah roof has a door with toplight. There is a low rendered brick wall with red brick capping to the front boundary line.
A 1913 PWD plan shows a small brick or stone residence on this site, with a verandah inset across the western portion of its front elevation and a small verandah in the centre of its rear elevation. The building is aligned very close to the eastern boundary of the lot, although the adjacent lot is vacant save some small outbuildings to the rear.
A 1993 photograph shows a smooth-rendered building with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The front windows are aluminium sliding windows not contemporary with the building. The low-pitch skillion verandah inset across the western portion of the front elevation and gable-roof section that completes the elevation match the footprint shown in 1913.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).
Medium degree of authenticity with some original fabric remaining.
(These statements based on street survey only).
Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
