Statement of Significance

Important for its restrained architectural character, typical of Albany as an exampleo f a large house of this era. Significant for its historic association

History

Built in 1882 for Willam Grylls Knight. After WW1 the building became a vice-regal residence until the 1930's when it became a girls school and later a maternity hospital. It was also used by US servicemen during WW2 and later a hostel for high school girls. The Health department then used it as a hostel for intellectually handicapped children. In 1992 the State Government decided to sell the building and was extensively renovated and restored in the early 2000's.

Integrity/Authenticity

A large two storied stone house with verandahs, built c. 1884, on an imposing site overlooking the town and the harbour, by William Grylls Knight, the first mayor of Albany. During the 1920's it was the summer residence of the Governor and was knownas Government House or Government Cottage.
