Statement of Significance

The water trough is one of 500 erected around the world following the death of Mr Bill in Sydney, 1927. He made his fortune from the manufacture of wire mattresses and left sufficient money to fund installation of the troughs. Another Bills trough can be found in front of the Hines Hill Hotel.

Physical Description

The trough is located in a small park adjoining Barrack Street East and protected by a timber frame. Nearby there is a wooden sign with the words "Memorial to Pioneers". The trough is of cast concrete, in four sections - the main trough, for horses, two end supports and smaller trough that sits on the ground between the end supports, for dogs. The manufacturer's name is cast into one end of the main trough, as follows:
Arnold, 339 Beaufort Street, Perth.
There is a piece missing from the curved end of the trough.
