The Hermitage is important as the work of J.C. Hawes and as his home during the period when he worked in Geraldton. The fine craftsmanship and distinctive features of the building add to its charm and it is attractively set on the sandhills below St John of God Hospital, overlooking the Indian ocean.
Built in 1935 of brick with a tiled roof, The hermitage has a living room on the ground floor with a fireplace at one end and a narrow jarrah staircase leading to the bedroom upstairs. Off the living room are a bathroom and W.C.. The living room floor is of polished Jarrah blocks and magnificent hand cut jarrah beams support the roof.
