Statement of Significance

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE gazetted with permanent entry as State Registered Place (26/11/2019) St George’s Hall Portico and Façade, Perth, a single storey rendered masonry front wall of a hall (now demolished) and portico in the Victorian Academic Classical
style, has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
+ the place was the first purpose-built hall for public entertainment in Perth until the construction of more elaborate venues in the 1890s following Western Australia’s Gold Boom;
+ the Victorian Academic Classical architectural style of the portico is relatively rare in Western Australia;
+ the construction of the place symbolises the evolution of Perth and Western Australia from a struggling colonial outpost with limited economic resources and population, into one that had become viable through the introduction of convicts and the assisted migration program; and,
+ the retention of only the façade and portico of St George’s Hall is reflective of the attitude to the conservation of heritage places in Western Australia in the mid-1980s.
Recent landscaping elements, including street trees and benches are of low significance. The new court building is not within the curtilage of this place.

Physical Description

Symmetrical facade with pediment portico derived from classical temple front. Conventional classical order of architecture as represented by Greek columns.

History

St. George's Hall was built in 1879 by the legal firm of Stone & Burt and was the first real theatre in Perth. In the 1880's it was well used by visiting and local performers but was very much an institution for the 'respectable classes'.

The building was constructed of brick with all the double storey facade designed by Henry G. Prinsep (an early settler) based on the Lyceum Theatre in London and designed to resemble a Greek temple with columns and steps leading up from Hay St.

The building was later used by various government departments including tramways, lithographic, Medical and Child Welfare Departments.

The Building was demolished in the 1986.

The facade remains intact with an area behind the facade being landscaped with a circular alfresco dining area being established.

Integrity/Authenticity

Low level of integrity.

Medium level of authenticity as only the facade remains intact and restored.
