The pole is a memorial to the original telegraph service and has historical and social significance.
The pole sits within a grassed area, a couple of metres from the southern kerb of Barrack Street, opposite the eastern end of the shops.
On the side of the pole there is a plaque with the following inscription:
Memorial Telegraph Services
Perth to Southern Cross opened 4.2.1892
Passed through Merredin old town site.
This pole was re-erected by Telecom Australia
for the Merredin Centenary 16/17.3.1991
