Palm trees were commonly used in the Australian landscape to contrast with indigenous flora and signify a focus of activity such as a farm house or public park. The palms have a social and historical significance.
The palms-are generally planted in groups of two or three, along the edge of roads, with other trees. Those along Barrack Street are located within a grassed strip which separates the street from facing car parks and successfully punctuate what could otherwise be a large open area. Those along Mitchell Street comprise a group of three in an open area used for earmarking and another single specimen between the Clock Tower Building and Court House.
Themes: Social & Civic Activities - Townscape
Apart from the pruned specimens, all of the palms are well positioned where they are unlikely to come to harm and are well shaped.
