Physical Description

A substantia l stone building with a tower and dome surmounted by a cross. Although not the first ecclesia stcal building erected in Fremantle, St. John 's with it's central position in Kings Square h3s dominated religious activities in the past since the first St. John's was opened for worship in 1843. The church as it stands today is cruciform in shape and is of the early English Decorative style. It consists of a nave 40 metres long and two transepts 25 metres in width. It was constructed of stone from the Government quarry in Cantonment Street and as originally roofed with shea-oak shingles. .All the roof structure is of jarrah as is the V-jointed match boarding which forms the lining.
The flooring is of the same mate rial except in the nave, entry and aisles where encaustic tiles have been laid. Many of the windows contain coloured glass supplied from the earlier church. The large stained glass window at the east end of the nave, however was included in the original design.
