Statement of Significance

The place is significant as the focus of social and community activity in Elgin since 1931.

Physical Description

Timber framed and clad with asbestos with a weatherboard (and hardiplank) dado. The roof is gabled and clad with corrugated iron. A lower roofed section at the front has a central double door covered by an awning and is flanked by a window central each side. The supper room is a lean to on the side of the hall.

History

The Elgin Siding was established in c1895, and became the centre of the Elgin community. The Elgin Hall is located in close proximity to the site of the Elgin Siding. In 1931, the need for a community hall for dances and meetings was recognised in the Elgin community. Fred Viceroy donated land, and a committee led by Eugene Scott got a second hand building from Claymore (a mill town south east of Capel) where David Reid worked as a teamster. A 'busy bee' of Elgin community members hauled the building into place. The Forestry Department donated jarrah logs and E Scott and helpers built a supper room. The Elgin Hall was a popular social venue in the district, and a feature was the "Elgin coffee' of hot milk and coffee essence. All functions contributed to paying off the hall. In 1997 the hall was still used regularly by the Elgin community.
