Commercial Building, 20-26 South Terrace, a single storey rendered brick and iron building constructed in the 1980s has little heritage significance although it is a representation of late Twentieth Century commercial buildings in the Fremantle area.
Commercial Building, 20-26 South Terrace is a single storey, rendered brick and Colorbond building. It has a symmetrical façade, with a shop entrance flanked either side by large shopfront windows. There is a Colorbond verandah awning projecting from the façade supported by timber posts with decorative timber brackets. The building has a rendered parapet with a central segmental pediment.
A copy of the certificate of title dated 25/3/1983 lists the property as Vol 1638 Fol. 495, Pt 225, Pt 226.
In 1880 the rate book shows a house/shop; in 1885 it is listed as new building plus house and shop. By 1905-6 it appears from the rate book that there is a bakehouse, stable and carriage shed, a butcher and a blacksmith as well as dwellings.
Historic aerial photographs of Fremantle indicate that the site was completely redeveloped between 1981 and 1995. A photograph c. 1982 shows the site largely vacant and another from 1985 shows a single storey light cream face brick building with a parapet wall at the front and a front verandah with plain wooden verandah posts. The building was then occupied by 'Timezone', a game and entertainment centre. A colour photo dated c1993 shows that the façade has been rendered and a curved pediment has been added to the parapet above the central front door.
In 2019 the heritage significance of the place was reviewed as part of the annual update of the heritage list and Local Heritage Survey. Council decided to removed the place from the Heritage List and change the Local Heritage Survey management category from Level 2 to Historic Record only.
As at 2021 the building is still occupied by 'Timezone'.
High degree of integrity (original intent clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).
Condition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).
The Fremantle MHI management category for this place was amended to Level 2 and adopted by the decision of Council on 28/09/2011.
In 2019 it was reviewed as part of the annual update of the heritage list and Local Heritage Survey and it was removed from the Heritage List and the Local Heritage Survey management category changed to Historic Record only.
