A local school was first established in the early part of the century, half way between "The Pump" on the Goldfields water supply and the township adjacent to the railway, which were both vying to become the town centre.
Following survey of the Merredin Townsite in 1906, the railway settlement achieved dominance and a new primary and secondary school was established on the Coronation Street site in 1912.
With population growth, buildings were progressively extended and replaced ultimately another primary school was built beyond the railway, named South Merredin, the older school becoming North Merredin.
The school was extended to a Junior High School with Domestic Science and Manual
Training centres in 1954. In 1957 a new five year High School was built on a new site and North Merredin reverted to just a Primary School.
Although the site contains various school buildings, only the main building is considered to be well designed for the climate and have both architectural and social significance.
The main building stretches along Coronation Street, with tall windows, facing south. There is a rendered porch at the main entrance, with the words "Merredin School". A full length verandah, under the main roof, runs along the north side of the main building. The main building faces a large court-yard/play-space at the rear (north side). Other buildings frame this central play-space.
Themes: Social and Civic Activities - Education
The main building has consistency and integrity .
