Statement of Significance

This substantial residence illustrates the way of life of an important farming family: the allocation of space of the family and the people who worked for them and the wealth associated with farming and how that was reflected in the interior fittings and features.

Physical Description

Federation Filigree Style with tuck point brick walls and replacement zincalume roof. The house has a "U" shape plan with associated out buildings, corrugated iron water tanks and the like. Grand scale house, central corridor, front door with leadlight and "Illareen" in stained glass, sidelights around door, flanked by bay windows.
The main entertaining room is at the front of the house, with French doors leading onto the verandah. The timber floored verandah is carried by thin turned posts with valance and decorative plaster ceilings. Approach drive consists of gums, with conifers around the house and Chinese pepper trees.
The kitchen, laundry and bathroom have been modernised. The billiard room and staff quarters remain original. The formal rooms have timberwork, leadlight and fireplaces, as well as wallpaper in the drawing room. The entry hall features a vaulted leadlight skylight, ornate plaster and woodwork.

History

The property known as "Illareen" was formed when the larger property "Goblup" was divided by the owner Ross Anderson into two properties "Illareen" and "Condeena". This was in 1904. Ross Anderson died at Katanning in 1945. Before his death "Illareen" was formed into a company known as R Anderson Co.
Ross Anderson was an important Katanning resident, who was keenly interested in the development of the district and assisted materially with initial ventures, participating in committee and was instrumental in the establishment of the Golf Club and Race Club. Ross and his brother Tom were also among the founders of the men's Katanning Club. The sheep bred at Illareen were very successful and often gain top price at sales.
