Statement of Significance

National Bank (fmr) has considerable historical significance due to its association with the original National Bank which was the first bank in Northam, built in 1888. It has social significance as the Shire Offices for the Northam district. It is aesthetically pleasing, demonstrating elements of the Federation Free Classical style, and contributes to the streetscape of the main commercial street of Northam.

Physical Description

The three distinct stages of development are clear. c.1888: original at the rear of existing building. 1895, extension adjoining, and in front of 1888 building. The building is constructed of red brick. The original street façade (parapet wall, with decorative motifs) is still intact. 1908: two storey red brick building has a rendered facade with an ornamental plasterwork arch over the door, and a decorative gabled pediment. The facade is symmetrical, with three long windows with decorative architraves across the top storey and flanking the central door at ground level.

History

The Northam branch of the National Bank of Australia opened in July 1888 as the first bank in Northam, managed by Anthony Madden. The original National Bank building appears to have been a substantial single storey residence purchased in 1889. It included offices, stabling and residential facilities. In 1895 a new brick frontage was added in front of the residence. In 1908, another new building was positioned immediately in front of the old building. The National Bank occupied the front building until 1938. When the bank moved to new, more modern premises in 1940, the Fitzgerald Street building stood vacant for some time. The building was sold to Mrs V Chidlow in 1941 for £1,630. The building was later taken over by the Shire of Northam and has housed the Shire Council Offices from c.1978 until c.2000.
