The ANZ Bank building has architectural significance, demonstrating a mix of stylistic ideas and additions, and contributes to the streetscape of the main commercial street of Northam. Its self confident style expressed society's growing prosperity in the Federation Free classical style.
ANZ Bank building, a double storey masonry building, is architecturally imposing. It is fronted by a symmetrical facade with three rusticated round arched head windows (expresses keystone and voussoirs) on the lower level, and three windows in a pilastered facade on the upper level. The tiled gabled roof is edged with two gabled parapet brick walls capped by decorative mouldings.
The Union Bank constructed this building in 1905-6 at a cost of £2,186. A new balcony was built in 1911. The Union Bank merged with the Bank of Australasia to form the Australia New Zealand Bank Ltd in 1951. Another merger took place in 1970 between the English Scottish and Australian Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group.
