Statement of Significance

House, 33 Marmion Street, is a single storey brick and tile house dating from c1915. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 33 Marmion Street is a single storey brick and tile house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted rendered brick. The roof is hipped with two gables and clad with tiles, and has terracotta finials. The verandah is part of the main roof and the centre gable is supported by timber posts. The gables have decorative timber struts. The central gable has a rendered infill. The left gable (possibly not original) has the same timber design, but no infill. There are timber framed windows. The house is situated at street level. There is a high rendered wall with steel pickets and a steel gate to the front boundary line. High vegetation prevents further description of the front elevation.

History

The Metropolitan Sewerage map sheet 2068 dated October 1915 show a brick house with a front verandah. There is a back verandah in the centre of the rear wall, with a bathroom indicated on the right hand side of the verandah. There is a timber wash house outbuilding towards the right hand side rear of the block, and a brick closet (toilet) on the left hand side of the block. The blocks on Marmion and Forrest Streets between Wood Street and Amherst Street have a back lane, which does not seem to be the case in most of these streets.
