The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of considerable cultural heritage significance in its own right within the context of Fremantle and its conservation is a priority.

Statement of Significance

The place is an example of a substantial two storey stone residence in the Federation Queen Anne style, representing the expansion of Fremantle in the gold boom period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Recent fibro additions are not significant.
The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.

Physical Description

Two storey painted stone and painted tuck pointed brick house which has fibro clad additions to the façade. The terracotta tile hipped roof has a faceted gable which extends from the faceted bay and two rendered chimneys with corbelling. There are weatherboard additions at the rear and a rendered pillared and low wall front fence which has cast iron inserts.

History

Ellen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor.
