Statement of Significance

The site and place represent significant associations with the presence of law and order in Bruce Rock and the development of those services and facilities.

Physical Description

Brick construction with a rendered finsh and a hipped tile roof.

P10690 Bruce Rock Police Station is a standard brick and tile police station in a style similar to the Late Twentieth Century Perth Regional Style. The place is on the Municipal Inventory and has the outward appearance of a small house. Some architectural components, such as door and window frames, appear to have been replaced with aluminium. Police records suggest the place was opened in 1971 but other indications are that it was constructed in 1955. This suggests there are two buildings, one the former police quarters or cour house (c.1955) adjacent to a c.1971 Police Station (P17374).

History

The site was first occupied by the Police House which was demolished when the existing Police Station was constructed. The police have had a presence in Bruce Rock since shortly after the advent of the hotel. The Police House provided accommodation for the Senior Police Officer. The establishment of a new Police Station and courthouse in the 1950's was foresighted and progressive, as most rural towns in the eastern wheatbelt established new complexes in the prosperous period of the late 1960's through the 1970's.
