Category Description
Municipal Inventory Adopted 18 Mar 1998 Category 4

Category 4

Some heritage value, but not essential to an understanding of the district. Recommend that the place is not included on the Town Planning Scheme at this time. Re-assess the significance of the place when the Inventory is regularly reviewed. Assess in more detail when considering a development application. Record the place prior to redevelopment or demolition. This category is not included in the Town Planning Scheme, and therefore a planning application is not required for proposed development or demolition of the place. Should a building or demolition application be received by Shire, it should be considered on the basis of the recognised heritage value, and the owner offered the same consultation facilities as for the Town Planning Scheme. The places in this category should be reviewed regularly with consideration for inclusion in the Town Planning Scheme.

Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates associations with the development of
Kondinin, and the provision of services.

Physical Description

A Rock wall was constructed in the excavated dam and a concrete tank constructed.

History

In the earliest days of exploration of the region,
Roe camped at Yeerakine Rock. Michael Brown, the "Father of Narrogin", and pastoralist of the
Jitarning area, held a pastoral lease over the rock. It was common for pastoralists to determine their
holdings with reference to water supplies. Arnold William and Ronald Sloan worked for Michael Brown.
AW was a sleeper cutter and sandalwood cutter. In 1921, Sloan share-farmed "Pyramid" with Brown,
and settled on that property.
The Yeerakine Rock dam was built in 1926 to provide a permanent water supply for the developing
town of Kondinin. A pump-house at the top of the rock pumped the water from the dam into a tank
from where it was gravity fed into the reticulation system in Kondinin town, and north and west as far as
Gordon's farm.
