Statement of Significance

The site of Roads Board office is of significance for representing the beginnings of the Meekatharra Roads Board and the ongoing local government until Shires were established in 1961.

History

The first meeting of the Meekatharra Road Board was held on 11 February 1910 at the hotel at the Twelve Mile (Yaloginda). The Board replaced the defunct Nannine Road Board and its secretary, Mr Masterton, was asked to act in that position for the new Board. The first meeting place, halfway between Nannine and Meekatharra, may have been chosen to smooth the transition. Subsequent meetings were held in the AWA Hall at Meekatharra until the Roads Board office was constructed. In 1961, Road Boards were replaced by Shire Councils.
