The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of some cultural heritage significance for its contribution to the heritage of Fremantle in terms of its individual or collective aesthetic, historic, social or scientific significance, and /or its contribution to the streetscape, local area and Fremantle. Its contribution to the urban context should be maintained and enhanced.

Physical Description

House, 36 Forrest Street is a single storey masonry and iron house constructed as a simple Federation Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are brick and render. The gable over the front projecting room has a vent and there is a Zincalume awning over the timber framed window. The front verandah is under an extension of the main roof. There is a tall brick chimney extant. The verandah is supported by square timber posts between decorative timber fret work. There is a simple carport addition on the eastern side of the house, and extensions to the rear.

History

The house was first listed in Post Office Directories in 1915, with William Fanning as resident. From 1919 to 1926 the resident was Henry C. Letts. From 1927 up until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease) the occupant was B. J. Fannon.
The 1915 sewerage map (No. 2068) shows an asymmetrical fronted brick house with a verandah on the west side and central steps, and another verandah at the rear on the east side.
The house was originally number 115 and became number 36 when the whole street was renumbered in 1939.
Aerial photos (Landgate) show that between 2000 and 2004 the house was reroofed. Between 2004 and 2010 the rear of the lot subdivided for another house (36a). An extension was recently (c2012) built to the rear and a new carport on the east side.
