Statement of Significance

The site of the Royal Hall demonstrates associations with socialising and recreation activities in the early years of Meekatharra’s history.

History

The Royal Hall was built by the owners of the Royal Mail Hotel and opened on 6 December 1913. It came to be regarded as the Town Hall. It was a timber framed gable roofed ironclad building clad with portico. Regular pictures began in the Royal Hall in 1914 on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, and an adjoining open-air picture garden was established. Between the AWA and Royal halls, Meekatharra moviegoers had more choice for movies than was available in most rural areas. The Hall had additions in 1935 along with the Hotel.
