Statement of Significance

House, 18 Howard Street, is a single storey brick and tile house dating from 1934. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Inter-War California Bungalow style of architecture.

Physical Description

House, 18 Howard Street is a single storey brick and tile house constructed in the Inter-War California Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted rendered brick. The roof is hipped with two street facing gables, and clad with tiles. The gables have horizontal and timber decorative panelling, similar to No 20 Howard Street. The verandah is under one gable roof, supported by rendered columns and a rendered half wall balustrade. The asymmetrical front façade has three timber framed casement windows under the other gable roof with a flat awning hanging from steel brackets. The facade under the verandah roof has similar timber framed casement windows. The house is situated at street level. There is a low rendered masonry wall to the front boundary line with a red face brick return wall along the driveway.

History

House 18 Howard St was built between 1934 and 1939 by Cologero Micale who owned and occupied it.
The house is Lot 2 of 615.
