The site represents associations with education and a way of life no longer practised.
In 1905, Alex McKinley donated a portion of land for use as a school. A school was constructed with quarters next to it. Up until 1925 the school was known as the Elsterwick School, but it changed to Barbetn School in 1925. It closed in 1927 due to low attendance.
