Physical Description

House, 98 Holland Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed as a simple variation of the Victorian Georgian style of Architecture. The walls are painted timber weatherboard. The roof is hipped and corrugated iron clad. The front verandah sits under an extension of the main roof, although at a different pitch. The verandah is supported by timber posts. The front façade has double hung timber windows. There is a skillion roof addition to the rear, also of weatherboard and iron. The place has an unpainted timber picket front boundary fence and gate.

History

Twelve houses Holland Street (Nos. 90-112) were all built by 1902.
Lot 1151 was vacant in 1900. A cottage was built in 1901/02 and was owned and occupied by George Henry Albert Cox, a labourer. Numbers were allocated in 1905. The house was originally number 171, and became number 98 when the whole street was renumbered in 1937.
The 1914 Sewerage Plan (No 2118) shows that this weatherboard house is set back from the street, a point of difference to the rest of the row of houses in the block.
By 1909/10 Jane Alice Howard was the owner, and William Henry Howard is the main occupant until c1937. George Wilfred Mottram was the resident from 1942 until at least 1949 (when post office directory records cease).
Aerial photos show that the lot was subdivided and another house built at the rear c2010.
The place was for sale in 2016 and an advertised floor plan and photos online show that the house was a typical four roomed cottage with a central passageway, and a skillion at the rear for the kitchen/bathroom. The back two rooms have been opened out into one open space, and there are two rooms added to the west side. The rear skillion and side addition are clad in painted corrugated iron (Colorbond).
