Some Significance |
A significant community asset of remnant vegetation and large Tuart trees close to urban and coastal environments.
The twin peaks of the Maidens sit amid coastal vegetation and a stand of mature Tuart trees. It is an attractive landscape providing a 360 degree view of surrounding land and ocean areas.
The Maidens, twin conical peaks, were recorded as significant landmarks and ocean navigational references by English and French maritime explorers from the late 1790s.
The urban bushland around the Maidens provides a pleasant ocean environment and contains rich and rare in biodiversity. The area is used extensively for recreational purposes, including walking along structured paths.
Attempts by Homeswest to annex some of the bushland for housing development has been fiercely opposed by some sectors of the community. In particular, 21 hectares of old growth forest in the bushland, known as the Shearwater Tuart Forest, is one of the few remaining forests of original Tuart forest.
Natural landscape, vegetation and landforms.
Valley is in good condition, however the dune system is fragile and shows signs of deterioration.
