Statement of Significance
The place has interest as a row of three terrace houses finely detailed in Federation Queen Anne style.
The place forms part of a group of residential and commercial buildings and contributes to the historic character of the area.
The place reflects the expansion and development of residential and commercial buildings on the city fringes during the rapid population increase of the 1890's gold boom and the early years of the twentieth century.
The place is rare as an example of late nineteenth and early twentieth century terrace housing extant within the City at Perth.
Physical Description
Row of three attached single storey residences with hipped corrugated iron roofs and half-timbered gables to front. Central house has faceted bay window. Walls are brick (painted) with rendered bands. Verandah under separate roof. Contemporary fence with brick lower section surmounted by a timber picket fence. Rendered chimneys with cornices.
History
Nos.17-21 are located on Lot Y164, which was originally owned by James MacKay, agent. The land appears to have remained undeveloped for a number of years, with no houses being listed along the Palmerston Street side of the rot in the Post Office directory for 1906. In 1910 a number of residents are listed, suggesting this west side of Palmerston Street was well settled by 1909-10. Residents included: No.17, Mrs West, a teacher
of music; No.19, Mrs Frederick Jones; and No.21, Mrs Evans.
