The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of exceptional cultural heritage significance in its own right within the context of Fremantle and its conservation is required. It is recommended that this place be considered for entry in the Heritage Council of Western Australia's Register of Heritage Places.

Statement of Significance

Warehouse, 2 Leake Street, has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
The place has aesthetic significance as an example of a commercial building dating from the first decades of the twentieth century that makes a contribution to the Fremantle Port streetscape. The place is representative of the industry and commerce associated with the Fremantle port. The place has historic and social significance as the former site of the Racehorse Hotel, an early (1850s) hotel in the West End of Fremantle.

Physical Description

Two storey face brick and corrugated iron roof building, with a zero setback from the pavement. The building has large engaged pilasters featuring Flemish bond brickwork. There is a central drive through entrance, timber windows to the first floor and a small circular window to the east side of the façade.

History

A two storey hotel, the Racehorse Hotel, was managed by Paterson and Cornish c1850s. It was reported as the principal building in Leake Street in 1869. Whilst the rates records do not appear to make any reference to the Racehorse Hotel, a number of oral histories and newspaper references locate it on this site. Reference is made to the owners Cornish and Paterson in 1856-59, who were reported to be the managers of the hotel.
Rates records indicate residences on lot 125 & 126 from 1880.
The hotel and/or residences were likely demolished to make way in the early 1900s for a warehouse to serve the gold boom era of the port.
The Princess Theatre (29-33 Market Street) was built in 1912. An arcade behind, in this building, originally gave access to the Princess Theatre.
In 2002 it was occupied by 'Home & Office Furniture.'
