The original and only hotel in Wyalkatchem and has kept it's original use. It was the first brick building of any kind in the town. The interrior has had some changes but not significant.
Comprises of the old and new hotel adjoining. Both are made from brick and iron.
The original part of the hotel is single storey, with a parapet at the front displaying the title ‘Wyalkatchem Hotel’. The new part of the hotel is double storey with a timber verandah.
The original hotel was built in 1919 with the adjoining extension in 1925.
The first brick building in Wyalkatchem which was built for Bertie Johnston. The two storey additions were designed by Herbert Parry and built by WH Roberts in 1925. William Smith from Kulin was the first licensee. Part of the roof and verandah were replaced after storm damage in 1937. In 1950 the Wyalkatchem Roads Board complained about the deterioration of the hotel but it wasn't until 1957 that work was carried out. The Johnston family then sold the hotel in 1958. Several people have owned the hotel since then.
