SIGNIFICANT AT LOCAL LEVEL Retain and conserve if possible; endeavour to conserve the significance of the place through provisions in the Town Planning Scheme with encouragement to the owner to conserve the place. Photographically record the place prior to any redevelopment.

Statement of Significance

The strip of timber framed shops in the main street have high aesthetic significance for their contribution
to the streetscape and the variation in use of material. The timber framed nature of the buildings may
give a perception of less worth than masonry buildings, however this should not be allowed to diminish
their significance.

Physical Description

The single storey timber framed strip of shops have bullnosed verandahs supported on timber posts at the kerb
line. The glazed, timber shopfronts under the verandahs appear to be original together with some fully glazed entry
doors. Above the verandahs there is a timber framed, flat asbestos sheet clad parapet screening the hipped CGI
roof behind. From some.directions the parapet gives a 'cardboard cut-out' appearance, however it demonstrates
the diversity of materials used. Overall, the building compliments the scale and character of the streetscape.

History

These shops were possibly transported from a Murchison Goldfield. The 'Busy Bee' drapery store owned by A. T.
Davies was sold to G. A. McMinn in 1926.
The shop occupied by Lockyers from 1991-2000, has previously been a cafe, a greengrocer and the residence of
Mr and Mrs Jack Mansell. (Northampton Historical Society)
