Statement of Significance

The small cottage has high historic significance given its connection to the early settlement of the Irwin District and the Leary family. The place demonstrates the use of local materials and is a rare example of cottages of its era.

Physical Description

1996
Sited immediately to the north-west of the new house, this small rendered random rubble limestone cottage has a hipped corrugated iron roof with a skillion to the rear. To the front (south), part of the verandah remains. It has a corrugated iron roof and is supported on timber posts. Windows to the front are timber framed and double hung, while to the west wall there is a small four pane pivot window. To the east wall there is a large fireplace and chimney.

History

The original tillage lease on this location was taken out by Corbert in 1868. By 1906 it belonged to the Leary family. It was purchased by H. Diprose in c.1920 who farmed here till he sold it to John Burton c1940s. It is still owned by the Burton family today.
