History

The post office was first established at Kondut in 1923, in a small corrugated iron shed. TH Martin and W Coote took it over in 1925, and built a weatherboard shop and post office. In 1926, C Bannister took it over. He operated the place until 1932, when Walter Robbins purchased and ran the place. In 1936, Padbury Stores also operating as a general store in Kondut, closed, and W Welch took over the post office and store from Robbins. In 1941, the place burnt down, and in 1942, R Taylor took over and built the house. Taylor ran the mail service and post office as well as groceries, green groceries, clothing, hardware, agricultural items, fuel, and agencies. He kept rainfall records from about 1931. The place was the phone exchange for the area, providing a valuable link to otherwise isolated farms. In 1956, Mr & Mrs Jack Gould bought the place from Ron Taylor, and built the shop in 1958. Mrs Gould ran the phone exchange from 7am to 9pm every day for 25 years with no holidays. There were 17 subscribers on the Kondut Phone exchange. Even after Mr Gould died in 1973, Mrs Gould continued the store and phone exchange. Mrs Gould left and the store closed in 1982, and is now empty.
