Category Description
Municipal Inventory Adopted 27 Oct 1998 Category 4

Category 4

Some heritage value, but not essential to an understanding of the district. Recommend that the place is not included on the Town Planning Scheme at this time. Re-assess the significance of the place when the Inventory is regularly reviewed. Assess in more detail when considering a development application. Record the place prior to redevelopment or demolition. This category is not included in the Town Planning Scheme, and therefore a planning application is not required for proposed development or demolition of the place. Should a building or demolition application be received by Shire, it should be considered on the basis of the recognised heritage value, and the owner offered the same consultation facilities as for the Town Planning Scheme. The places in this category should be reviewed regularly with consideration for inclusion in the Town Planning Scheme.

Statement of Significance

The Yerecoin Tavern was a significant development in the 1950s in Yerecoin, and has a sense of place for the many social gatherings that have taken place. It has associations with the McDonald family.

Physical Description

Cement brick and tile- also has a beer garden.

History

In 1955, AC McDonald and his brother in law HT Marshall, (son and son inlaw of the McDonalds who ran Yerecoin Traders) owner built the Yerecoin Hotel. They made cement bricks on site and employed Brian Steere, a brickie, to lay the bricks. The hotel opened in May 1955. The Carani football team abandoned Carani in favour of Yerecoin when the hotel was opened. At that time, the area was developing and the population increasing. There was a gallon license in Piawaning (and still is), a hotel in Bolgart, and New Norcia was temperance. The hotel was a significant meeting place in the area with people travelling from Wongan Hills, Bolgart, New Norcia and Bindi Bindi. About the 1980s, the bar was extended south, the toilets were built inside the building, and the hotel became a tavern (although the eight accommodation rooms are still there). The tavern continues to be a social venue in the area.
