History

This site is the location of the home of Samuel Vernon Chalwell (1898-1965).
The land on which the former residence was located was originally owned by the Sloan family. Helena Sloan married William McCormick in 1911 and Bill and his brother Ted McCormick built a home on the property in 1920. Bill and Lena McCormick lived at the house until the late 1920s when it was sold Sam Chalwell.
Sam and his wife Ethel May, nee Pollard lived at the house until Sam's death in 1965. He recorded his occupation as a labourer but he also leased a small farm before combining with his in-laws to by a small farm on the Mandurah Road.
Sam was a member of the Salvation Army and organised and conducted the Boy's Brass Band who regularly performed at the Rockingham Hotel in the Inter War years.
The house was demolished sometime between 1985 and 1995.
