Statement of Significance

• This place has historic value for its association with the development of the area in the early 20th century as a rural subdivision.
• The place has aesthetic value as an example of a simple Federation residence in good condition.
• The place has social value as it demonstrates the type of residence built for families in the early twentieth century.

Physical Description

Early 1900s single storey brick and iron residence positioned behind a small formal garden with a timber picket fence.

The property has a symmetrical brick façade laid in stretcher bond with tuck pointing. All the windows are arranged in pairs to the façade, two each side of the front entrance and are original timber framed sash windows with external fly screens attached. The main entrance comprises a timber and glass panelled door with a fanlight.

The roof is a steep pitched hipped form clad in zincalume with a broken pitch to the verandah canopy. The canopy is supported on turned timber columns. Two tall brick chimneys with corbelling extend from the sides of the property adding to the overall symmetry of the place.

History

This area of Gosnells was known as East Cannington until named Beckenham after a town near London with many of the street names reflecting this theme. Subdivision of this area began in the early twentieth century but it was not until the inter-war period that the area was more densely settled. The original lots of the subdivision were of approximately 2 hectares in size indicating that the intention was to develop this area for farming.

This residence is likely to have been built in the early 20th century. It has not been determined who were the original owners or occupants.

Aerial photographs of the street in the 1950s indicate that much of the surrounding land was still used for market gardens or orchards.
