Statement of Significance

The site represents a way of life associated with rural occupation. The place demonstrates a way of life, community co-operation and associations with water sports and recreation in Bruce Rock. It demonstrates associations with Bruce Rock identities, state dignitaries and a national identity.

Physical Description

Distinctive polychrome brickwork has been used in the pool entry and amenity building. A prominent vertical element in the contrasting brickwork signals the entry. The pool is a 2/3 Olympic sized pool.

History

The site is where the first sales yards were located. Although the idea of a pool had been talked about for years in Bruce Rock, it wasn't until 1955 that it became serious. A public meeting held in March 1856, was called by the Chamber of Commerce and the meeting elected a building committee to investigate the proposed pool and raise money. Stan Lonsdale was Chairman of the committee. The idea of a pool was mooted throughout the Shire and Shackleton and Kwolyin chose not to participate. Public subscriptions were called and by December 1956, 5000 pounds had been raised and the Road Board approached the Government for a grant against the proposed cost of 10,000 pounds. The final cost was 27,000 pounds, 8300 of which was raised by the committee. The pool was opened on 8th Novemeber 1958, by ARG Hawke, the Premier of Western Australia and a lap of honour was swum by Dawn Fraser. It was the first pool constructed in a small country town after Kalgoorlie (1937) and Merredin.
